Art History Homework - 28th April 2017
Re-watch the Khan Academy video on 'Luncheon at the Boating Party' by Renoir and add to your notes on the evaluation on the painting (SM, Comp etc.)
https://www.khanacademy.org/humanities/becoming-modern/avant-garde-france/impressionism/v/renoir-boating
We will be looking at 'The Umbrella's' next, Renoir's transitional painting. Please watch this video on it, to familiarise yourself with the painting before class next Tuesday.

This week I want you to explore TEXTURE. Really observe the world around you and photograph 4-6 different textures that you find. Do this early in the week. These must be printed out. They can be small A6 size (quarter of an A4 page). Chose two to work from. Cut them in half and make an extended drawing from them. That means stick one half down and try and replicate the other half from the photo on the page. Try this two ways:
1. Make the colour and tones to suggest the texture
2. Use mixed media to actually RECREATE the texture

Sketchbook Circle - Friday 21st
Sorry this is only going up today. This week's activity is the same as last week's, so you are taking the object from the sandwich that you drew in the book you currently have in your possession and putting it into an unusual location. Start the drawing of the object and then work out to include the place.
Tuesday 18th October - Homework
For Monday
In order to have enough interesting drawings to develop into a lino print, you need to add to your sketchbook by working from the photos that you took at the botanic gardens. Find two interesting leaves or flowers and make detailed drawings/paintings of them in your sketchbook. Go large, look for detail. Use any media you wish. Fill up your pages.

Sketchbook Circle - Friday 14th October
So this week you have to go back to the object you drew in your book (which you should have back this week - the element was from their sandwich which they drew in your book - hope that's right). get the object again and this week place it into an unusual environment or location.
For example, lets use a tomato as our object.
Where do you normally find it? In a package with other tomatoes or in the veg basket in the fridge or growing in the greenhouse.
So flip this on it's head, where would I not normally expect to find a tomato? Maybe in the sock drawer or in your pencil case etc
You must use the real object and draw from it in a real location. Start by focusing on drawing the object and then work outwards to include the environment.
it's up to you whether you do a single detail drawing/painting/ what ever media you wish of this or make a couple. Remember minimum is one page, but feel free to do more (particularly if you are think about a portfolio).

Botanic Gardens Project - Photos from the trip
Please upload all the photos you took on to a PINTEREST board. Make sure to FOLLOW me (msdmaguire) and send me a link to your board tonight.
Sketchbook Circle - Friday 7th October
You are now going to have back in your possession the book that you drew your unusual sandwich in. This week you are going to do the same as you did in your own book last week, that is, take your favourite object from your sandwich (the most visually interesting) and make at least 3 'in the round' drawings. Think about what you could have improved on doing this activity last week.
Minimum requirement is an A4 page as usual, but of course more would be great!
- Could you spend a bit more time?
- Did you do 3 different drawings?
- From 3 different angles?
- In 3 different media?
- Did you vary the scale of each drawing?
- Did you fill the pages well (no empty spaces or small interesting ones)?
- Can you work back into some of the empty pages in the book (if pages have been skipped or have lots of empty spaces)?
Minimum requirement is an A4 page as usual, but of course more would be great!

Sketchbook Circle - Friday 30th September
This week's topic:
Chose ONE element of your partner's sandwich (i.e. a tomato, rubber gloves etc. Try and use something that's in your house, that you don't have to buy anything for it). You will be making investigative drawings of that object this week.
LOOK; INVESTIGATE; EXPLORE; DRAW
You can use any media you want - but your focus is LINE & TONE
Pencil is allowed (but only on one drawing)
Charcoal
Black & white pencils
chalk
ink
working on a stained ground or mid tone paper
Black and white paint
monochrome work in another colour range than black and white e.g. all the different tones of blue.
Use your viewfinder for close-up sections.
A MINIMUM OF 3 DRAWINGS PLEASE - all from different angles and viewpoints
Try and do a page of sketches of your object from different angles, think about COMPOSITION on the page - no large empty spaces. Below are some examples to help you (also think of the page of drawings of baked beans we looked at on the 2nd week in class). Click on the images to see them in full. (The composition on the pages of the onions is a little weak btw, but the student just about gets away with it by using notes to fill up the negative spaces.)

Sketchbook circle Friday 23rd September
This week's topic to to make an unusual sandwich.
The sandwich must have an unusual filling sticking out - something that isn't normally in a sandwich. Think back to the example we looked at in class.
You will need to spend some time deciding what the sandwich will be - what type of bread, lettuce, tomatoes? And then the object. Make sure the object is visible. Think about what would make an interesting drawing so use items that are colourful, have good form, nice textures etc. You can use any type of bread.
You must make the actual sandwich and draw directly from it and then take first hand photos (as it gets old, mouldy and limp) to continue this activity.
You are asked to do minimum of 3 drawings of the sandwich from 3 different angles or viewpoints. Think about drawing the sandwich full, or deconstructed or with a bite out. Should you draw the whole thing or do a close-up magnified section? Up to you.
Each study needs to be in a different media. Really fill up the pages well and if you can, print out and stick in any photos you took of the sandwich (think about composition here please - nice clear, close up images for detail)

Homework Reminder
Just a quick reminder that the homework for tomorrow's class is the introduction paragraph along with the paragraph that addresses the statement generally.
Sketchbook Circle for this week
Sorry this is so late going up! Just realised I hadn't posted this week's recap for Sketchbook circle!.
So as discussed in class, I want you to make 3 viewfinders with the cardboard you were given, each a different size/shape (though stick with either squares or rectangles - no crazy shapes please).
The theme this week is still food, but you are to respond in some way, to the food that your partner already selected. So we used Anna's biscuits as an example, either chose a food that you think of when you look at biscuits e.g. tea or something opposite e.g. crisps as they are a savoury snack food as opposed to a sweet snack food.
YOU MUST WORK FROM LIFE. THAT MEANS DRAWING FROM THE FOOD DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF YOU. No secondary sources please!!!! If you work from a first hand photo that YOU took, you must stick it in to the book also.
Pencil is once again banned. And the focus is investigation. So fill a double page spread (or the back and front of a page) with lots of primary source drawings/paintings etc of your food item(s). Lots of colour please.
Try and make every page in this book the best, most observed page possible.
We'll look at them all in Friday's class!

Friday 9th September - Sketchbook Circle
As we didn't have class today, the instructions for this week's sketchbook circle class will be posted here. If you didn't have your book in class today to give to your first swap partner, make sure to give it to them on Monday. we will use a bit of Monday's class to look at the work you did this week.
What I had planned to do in today's class was to make some grounds to stick into at irregular intervals into your books. Working on a non-white ground makes your pages more visually interesting. This week, in the book that you are working in, add a minimum of 5 new pages with different grounds.
What is a 'ground'?
A ground is just a way of saying a background or a surface that you are working on. The standard 'ground' is white cartridge paper like the paper in your sketchbooks. So add in some new pages to the book that are not white or cartridge paper, e.g. coloured sugar paper; brown wrapping paper, black paper etc. If you are doing this cut the new sheet of paper to size and attached it to the book with tape at the seam. A second thing to do is to use inks or water colours to add some colour to your pages, try adding the inks/paint on to wet or dry paper and see the difference. Layer up the colour from translucent areas to more opaque areas. Just be careful not to use more than 2 colours as it is distracting otherwise. Newspaper glued onto paper can be an interesting surface to work on as well, but it's important to wash over it with some white acrylic or gouache paint first to take the harshness of the text and unify the page. Have a look at the images on my board Stained Grounds on my Pinterest page (click the logo on the top of this banner or copy and paste the link below)

Batik h/w Friday 14th March
For next Friday, chose 1 of the Post-impressionist and Expressionist painting from below and using tracing paper trace the main outlines and then trace into your sketchbook. Identify the main colours in the image and list in terms of light to dark. Decide which contrast colour to the main colours you will paint on. Then try these colours out on your outlined version in your sketchbook. Using your colouring pencils, colour the shapes you want to be the contrasting or complementary colour first, then leave the areas you want to be white and colour the rest of the image in the lightest colour of the colour family. Colour in the next lightest on top of the lightest and continue to do this untill you are happy with the finished image. Any problems show me in Wednesday's class.

Identity Project
The next stage in the Identity project is to plan for your own art work. Here is the information you need to do that.
Planning your art work
In the next page of your sketchbook, start planning your own art work. You must make connection to at least one of the artists that you researched. Decide on the following:
· Subject matter – who or what is your art work going to be about (must connect in some way to your identity)
· Media – are you going to use acrylic or ink; watercolour or oil pastel etc. Connect the media to one of your artists.
· Ground – what surface are you planning to work on; is it a document, map, book page, a wall etc.? Explain how it connects to your artist.
· What technique will you use? Smooth and polished brushwork or rough and textured?
In what ever way you like, write the answers to these questions in your skectbook. Make a list of anything you need to collect or any photos you need to take.
Finally draw a thumbnail (a small mini version of the final thing) which shows how you intend the final piece to look like.
This work is due for the 1st Wednesday back (7th Oct)

Homework
Start adding to your visual research relevant to your area of investigation. So take photos of the figurative element you are going to research. make more drawings etc. the more you add, the better your research and the higher your grade!
Hand in of module's work.
Just a reminder that are sketchbooks are due to be handed in on Tuesday's class (2nd Oct). Ensure you are happy with the quantity and quality of work you are handing in. Look over the assessment sheet and see if you can add to any of the sections that you are going to marked on. Make sure you have included some artist's work that connects and include at least 1 development. We will be starting a print module next week.
Homework
1. Look for some artists that work either in the same media as you have (e.g. the charcoal/tonal artists we looked at in class) or artists who looked at the same objects as you or ideas as you. Print out at least 1 relevant image and stick in your sketchbook. Make sure you like the artwork and explain why and how it connects or could be influential to your work beside it in your sketchbook.
2. Continue working on additional developments in your sketchbook at home. Here are the starter ways to develop ideas from the drawings made in your book., that were on the board in class today.
a) Draw one of your objects on an unusual surface, i.e. not paper. think of unusual surfaces that may be interesting to draw on, like sandpaper, tracing paper, newspaper. What would be the best medium to use etc. Explore and experiment.
b) Draw or make an image of your object or an element of your object using an unusual media. E.g. Rachel used wood glue on paper to create low relief textures of melon skin.
c) Merge 2 ideas and the objects that you used to represent them together. For example what would happen if a lemon merged with a pliers? Could you use photocopies chopped up and stuck together in new ways to create new forms or could you draw lemon skin onto the pliers? The list of possible outcomes is endless.
d) Put one of your objects in an unusual context or environment. E.g what is the object used for and could you draw it or collage it being used in a different way? Or could you place it in an unusual environment and draw it there. E.g. a tap normally lives by a sink but what if I draw it poking out of a plant pot? Or in the fridge or tucked up in bed. Remember these can be as silly as you like, it's just to start you thinking more creatively.
e) If you use your object (and not the art rooms) and you are happy to do this; break the object apart in some way and reassemble it into a new form (shape). This can either look like a new recognizable shape (e.g. break up orange skin and use the pieces to that the shape of a tree) or look liike a randon mbstract shape (just stack to orange skin and make draqwings from it.
This is the last week of this project so remember that you will be handing in your sketchbooks next week on Tuesday (2nd October. You will be assessed using the assesment sheets handed out a couple of weeks ago.
